A Russian drone struck a residential apartment building in Galati, Romania on May 29, 2026

Galati, Romania — May 29, 2026
A Russian drone struck a residential apartment building in the eastern Romanian city of Galati early Friday morning, injuring two people and sending shockwaves through NATO in what marks one of the most serious escalations of the Ukraine war yet.
The incident occurred during an overnight Russian drone barrage against Ukrainian infrastructure near the Romanian border. One of the 232 drones launched by Russia overnight crossed into Romanian airspace and struck the roof of an apartment block in Galati — a city of 250,000 people located roughly 10 miles from the Ukrainian border.
The roof of the apartment block was visibly charred in video footage shared by Romanian emergency services, while response teams and investigators inspected the site of impact Friday morning.
Two people were injured in the strike.
The reaction from Romania and its NATO allies was swift and furious.
Romania's Ministry of Foreign Affairs officially labelled the incident a serious violation of international law and summoned Moscow's ambassador to Bucharest for an urgent explanation.
US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker condemned the strike, stating:
"We will defend every inch of NATO territory."
NATO Secretary General confirmed he was in direct contact with Romanian leadership, while NATO's Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) confirmed the drone was Russian.
Romania is now urgently calling on its NATO allies to provide additional anti-drone defense systems to protect its eastern border.
This is not an isolated incident. According to CNN, this marks the 28th time Russian drones have breached Romanian airspace since Moscow began attacking Ukrainian ports across the Danube.
Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev warned that similar incidents could continue as long as European states support Ukraine, adding that EU countries should "shut up" on the matter.
Ukrainian forces reported shooting down 217 of the 232 drones launched by Russia overnight, with one ballistic missile also fired.
The strike raises urgent questions about NATO's response threshold. Article 5 of the NATO treaty — which states that an attack on one member is an attack on all — has not yet been formally invoked, with Romanian officials stressing this was not a deliberate attack on Romania but a consequence of the nearby conflict.
However, with 28 confirmed airspace violations and now a direct hit on a civilian residential building, pressure on NATO leadership to take stronger action against Russia is growing by the hour.
