Four illegal gas tankers exploded at a clandestine fuel storage site in Tepeaca, Puebla on June 4, 2026, sending a massive fireball into the sky.

Tepeaca, Puebla, Mexico — June 4, 2026
A massive fireball tore through the sky over Tepeaca, Puebla on Thursday morning after four illegal gas tankers exploded at a clandestine fuel storage site — forcing the emergency evacuation of 2,000 people including hospital patients, schoolchildren and residents from the surrounding neighborhood.
The explosion happened at approximately 9:53 a.m. on Thursday in Tepeaca, in the state of Puebla. The explosion occurred at a warehouse where gas tanker trucks were being stored. Four gas cisterns exploded, while Puebla Governor Alejandro Armenta later said officials estimated that six tanker trucks were involved overall.
Video from the scene showed a column of black smoke rising above a nearby Pemex gas station before a large explosion sent flames high into the air. Other footage showed a massive orange fireball expanding over trees and nearby buildings.
The explosion was felt across a wide radius. Residents described walls shaking, windows shattering and a wave of heat passing through the neighborhood in the moments after the blast.
The scale of the emergency response was immediate and massive.
Among the most significant evacuations was that of the BUAP "2 de Octubre" preparatory school and the Centro Escolar Miguel Negrete Novoa, where more than 1,700 students, teachers and staff were evacuated preventively. Videos on social media showed children and students being moved away from the area accompanied by teachers and administrative staff as flames consumed the gas tankers.
About 60 patients were among those evacuated from the Tepeaca General Hospital. Firefighters, civil protection crews, state police, the army, the navy and prosecutors all responded to the scene. Authorities also inspected a nearby warehouse where additional gas trucks were found.
This explosion was not an accident born of industry. It was the direct consequence of Mexico's rampant illegal fuel trade — known locally as "huachicol."
The blast occurred at a warehouse suspected of operating as a clandestine hydrocarbon storage facility, located directly behind schools and medical facilities with high civilian traffic.
Firefighters, civil protection crews, state police, the army, the navy and prosecutors responded to the scene. The Puebla government activated a unified command to coordinate the emergency response.
Mexico's illegal fuel tapping industry — which involves stealing petroleum directly from national pipelines and storing it in improvised facilities — has been responsible for multiple catastrophic explosions across the country in recent years.
Three people were injured and taken to hospital for treatment. No deaths were immediately reported.
Given the proximity of the explosion to a functioning hospital, a high school and hundreds of residential homes, the relatively low casualty count reflects both the speed of the evacuation response and a significant degree of fortune.
Puebla Governor Alejandro Armenta personally traveled to the affected zone to oversee the emergency response and support personnel working to contain the fire and assess structural damage to nearby buildings.
Officials said the fire was still being put out and that a full assessment would be possible once crews finished working at the site. There were reports of damage caused by the blast wave.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the ownership and operation of the clandestine storage facility. Criminal charges related to illegal fuel storage and endangerment of the public are expected to follow.
For the community of Tepeaca — the images of a fireball rising above their schools and hospital will not be forgotten quickly.
DeSanta News will continue to follow this story as the investigation develops.
